Goosebumps

I went invisible for the first time on my twelfth birthday. It was all Whitey's fault, in a way. Whitey is my dog. He's just a mutt, part terrier, part everything else. He's all black, so of course we named him Whitey. If Whitey hadn't been sniffing around in the attic... Well, maybe I'd better back up a bit and start at the beginning My birthday was on a rainy Saturday. It was a few minutes before kids would start arriving for my birthday party, so I was getting ready. Getting ready means brushing my hair. My brother is always on my case about my hair. He gives me a hard time because I spend so much time in front of the mirror brushing it and checking it out. The thing is, I just happen to have great hair.

The Famous Five

"I've a good mind to!' said George. 'I can't imagine hols without the boys. Why - we shan't be the Five - the Famous Five - if they don't come! 'Woof!' said Timmy, quite agreeing. He sat down and tried to scratch his ear, but the big collar prevented him. He didn't seem to mind and ran off after a rabbit quite happily. 'I think you are more upset about that collar than Timmy,' said Anne, as they walked along. 'Are we getting near this place of yours, George? It's a jolly long way.' 'We go up this hill in front of us - and then drop down to a little copse,' said George. “There's a funny old cottage nearby-quite ruined and empty. At first I thought perhaps people lived. there, but when I went nearer I saw that it was ruined. There's a big old roserambler climbing all over it, even inside. I suppose the people who used to live there planted it.' They walked up the little hill and down again, following curving rabbit paths. 'Better look out for adders,' said Anne. 'This is just the kind of place for them. My word, it's hot, George. Is there anywhere to bathe near here - a pool or anything?' 'I don't know. We could explore and see,' said George. 'I did bring my swimsuit just in case. Look, you can see part of the old cottage now. My camp is fairly near there. I thought I'd better camp near the spring.' They were soon at George's rough little camp. Her tent was up, and she had made a bed inside of the springy heather.

Afternoon Of The Elves

The afternoon Hillary first saw the elf village, she couldn't believe her eyes. "Are you sure it isn't mice?" she asked Sara-Kate, who stood beside her, thin and nervous. "The houses are small enough for mice.” "No, it isn't," Sara-Kate said. "Mice don't make villages in people's backyards." Hillary got down on her hands and knees to look more closely. She counted the tiny houses. There were nine, each made of sticks bound delicately together with bits of string and wire. "And there's a well," she whispered, "with a bucket that winds down on a string to pull the water out.” "Not a bucket. A bottlecap!" snorted Sara-Kate, twitching her long, shaggy hair away from her face. She was eleven, two years older than Hillary, and she had never spoken to the younger girl before. She had hardly looked at her before. "Can I try drawing some water?" Hillary asked. Sara-Kate said, "No." The roofs of the houses were maple leaves attached to the sticks at jaunty angles. And because it was autumn, the leaves were lovely colors, orangered, reddish-orange, deep yellow.

My Friend's A Werewolf

I thought werewolves only existed in stories and late-night films. Now I know they are real. It's an incredible story but I am going to tell you everything. Then maybe you'll believe too. I remember exactly when my story started. It was on a Saturday afternoon at the beginning of November. I was pretending to be tidying up my room when actually I was sitting on my bed reading a horror story. It was starting to get dark and

Outliers: The Story of Success

Why do some people achieve so much more than others? Can they lie so far out of the ordinary? In this provocative and inspiring book, Malcolm Gladwell looks at everyone from rock stars to professional athletes, software billionaires to scientific geniuses, to show that the story of success is far more surprising, and far more fascinating, than we could ever have imagined. He reveals that it's as much about where we're from and what we do, as who we are - and that no one, not even a genius, ever makes it alone. Outliers will change the way you think about your own life story, and about what makes us all unique. 'Gladwell is not only a brilliant storyteller; he can see what those stories tell us, the lessons they contain' Guardian 'Malcolm Gladwell is a global phenomenon ... he has a genius for making everything he writes seem like an impossible adventure' Observer 'He is the best kind of writer - the kind who makes you feel like you're a genius, rather than he's a genius' The Times

A Treasure-trove of Children Stories

The Seven-Killer Hero

One day Kanai's wife put some clay cooking pots in the sun to dry, and she said to Kanai: "See that no one breaks them." With some flattened rice, molasses and a stick, Kanai sat in the sun to keep vigil. On-again and off-again he ate some flattened rice and looked at the cooking pots to check whether they were invaded. Somehow some molasses got dropped on the cooking pots, and a lot of flies fluttered into them to lap it up. He soliloquized: "Okay! Invading the pots? Fine, just wait.” Then he swung into action, and he hit the flies in such a way that he not only killed the flies but also broke the pots into smithereens.

Counting the numbers, Kanai found out that he had killed seven flies, and he sat glum-faced and reserved, holding the stick in his armpit. Hearing the sound of the breaking of the cooking pots, his wife arrived at the spot with a broom in her hand and asked him: "What happened?" But there was no reply from Kanai; instead, he turned even more pensive and reticent whenever his wife pestered him with more questions. At last when his wife started overdoing the matter, in bloodshot eyes he said: "Count me before saying anything to me.

I killed seven flies in one go. Do you know?"

Since that day Kanai had kept himself tight-lipped. He did not talk with anyone. Being insisted, he would repeat the same dialogue: "Count me before saying anything to me. I killed seven flies in one go."

At last Kanai wore a headgear that he had made out of a piece of coarse cloth. Cutting a bamboo from a forest, he made a fat and a strong stick. Then wearing a Piran, fastening a piece of cloth around his waist, brandishing the stick and putting on shoes, he embarked on his journey to the King's palace to work there as a wrestler. While leaving the house, he told his wife: "I won't stay at your place any longer. I can kill seven in one go."

Passersby asked him about the place he was going to, but Kanai refused to answer their queries. He decided that he would not reply to anyone's queries if he were addressed as Kanai. He had killed seven in one go. Could he be addressed as Kanai any more? He should be addressed as the seven-killer hero from now on.

Kanai saluted the king and stood before him who got surprised looking at Kanai's headgear
