সে ছিল তাদেরই একজন। এমন অনেক সুন্দরী মেয়ে আছে যারা ভাগ্যের পরিহাসে নীচ কুলে জন্মায়; তাদের টাকা বা উপযুক্ত যৌতুক দেবার ক্ষমতা না থাকায় এমন কোনাে ধনীলােকের সঙ্গে যােগাযােগ হবার কোনাে আশা থাকে না যারা তাদের প্রেমে পড়বে এবং তাদের বিয়ে করবে। সে ছিল সেইসব মেয়েদেরই একজন। তাই তাকে শেষপর্যন্ত লােকশিক্ষা দপ্তরের একজন ছােট কেরানিকে বিয়ে করতে প্রায় বাধ্যই হতে হয়েছিল।

বাগানে হাঁটছিল হীরা। বাগানে কত গাছ! গাছ হীরার খুব ভাল লাগে।
হীরা দাঁড়ায় একটা গাছের কাছে। এটা পাতাবাহার গাছ। হীরা গাছটা তুলে নিল।
গাছটা হীরা রাখে জানালার ওপর। ভাবে, গাছটা সব সময় দেখবে। ভাবতে ভাবতে ঘুমিয়ে পড়ে হীরা।
সকালে চোখ গেল গাছের দিকে। একি! গাছটা এমন মরা কেন? সবুজ রং গেল কোথায় ? খুব খারাপ লাগে হীরার ।
বনের পাশে একটা গর্তে একটা মা ইদুর তার বাচ্চা ইঁদুরকে নিয়ে থাকতাে। মা ইঁদুর তার গর্তের পাশে তার বাচ্চার জন্যে একটা খেলার জায়গা তৈরি করে দিয়েছিল। সেখানে। গাছগাছালি ছিল, ফুলের বাগান ছিল, এমনকি দোল খাওয়ার জন্য কচু গাছ থেকে ঝুলিয়ে দেয়া একটা দোলনাও ছিল । বাচ্চা ইদুর সেই দোলনাতে প্রতিদিন দোল খেতাে।
একদিন সকালবেলা বাচ্চা ইদুর ঘুম থেকে উঠে গর্ত থেকে বের হয়ে দ্যাখে তার। গাছগাছালি, ফুলের বাগান, দোলনা আর দোলনা ঝােলানাের কচু গাছ সবকিছু কে যেন মাড়িয়ে তছনছ করে দিয়েছে। বাচ্চা ইদুর কাঁদতে কাঁদতে তার মায়ের কাছে এসে নালিশ করল।
মা ইদুর রেগেমেগে বলল, “কার এতাে বড় সাহস?”
আমি হীরা। বলব মজার মজার সব কথা। স্বপ্নে দেখি একটা ঝুড়ি হাঁটছে। সবজির ঝুড়ি। কেউ কথা বলছে না আমার সাথে। রাগ করেছে ওরা। ঘুম থেকে উঠলাম। বুঝলাম কেন সবজিরা রাগ করেছে। আসলে আমি ঠিকমত সবজি খাই না। শুরু করলাম নানা । রকম সবজি খাওয়া ।
