The Times Su Doku Book 1

In Japan, they don't do many crosswords. They do Su Doku instead. Thousands of puzzles are devoured in train carriages and waiting rooms every day. Yet, although the name is Japanese - roughly translating as ‘Number Place' – the puzzle itself, originally, may not be. A simpler version was created by Euler, the 18th-century Swiss mathematician, and today's Su Doku puzzle is thought to have evolved from that. All puzzles in this book were created by Wayne Gould, a puzzle enthusiast, and former Hong Kong judge. He came across Su Doku in a Tokyo bookshop, began making puzzles himself, and brought them to The Times.

Since the first puzzle appeared on the front cover of T2 on 12 November 2004, the daily back page Su Doku puzzle has become a phenomenon. Thousands enter the newspaper's competition each day and many readers have written in to say how much they enjoy the puzzles - including former Bletchley Park codebreakers who never miss a day, and computer enthusiasts who have created programmes to solve puzzles that they cannot.

Some readers, it is true, have been less delighted. Family feuds over who gets the back page at breakfast appear to have become commonplace.

In the beginning of the book, the readers are presented with a frame story describing a train journey, during which the author meets a girl who desires to tell him a story. However, there was one condition that he had to adhere to if he wanted to hear the story. This condition specified that he had to base his second book on the story. The book talks about how the employees receive a phone call from God during their work timings at the call center. The characters in this novel include Radhika, Esha, Shyam, Priyanka, Varun, and Military Uncle. These six characters are deeply disturbed by the events taking place in their own lives, and choose to focus on their problems rather than trying to find a way out of them. In this book, Bhagat throws light on the lives of the individuals in present day India, who are residing in the metro cities. The language utilized by the author is simple, and contains witty remarks on urban culture and relationships. What young India wants

After writing some successful novels, Chetan Bhagat penned his first nonfiction work. This book contains all his hopes and dreams, and his fears and anxieties about India. What Young India Wants is divided into three sections, the first titled Our Society. In this, he looks at various aspects of Indian society and also does a comparison between Indian and American societies. He also goes into the issues of religion, terrorism, and caste differences.

The second section is Politics. He discusses corruptions and other major issues, and gives his ideas on the constructive measures that need to be taken to tackle these issues. He also includes an essay in support of Anna Hazare and his movement. The third section is Our Youth. This section looks at the young people of India in the current scenario, and explains what their dreams and aspirations are. He writes on topics like brain drain, the need for educational system reforms, and the communication gap between the old and new generation.

What Young India Wants also contains two short stories. It presents his ideas on what needs to change and in some cases he also suggests how these changes can be brought about. This book is a reflection of the author’s concern for the future of his motherland and its youth. It expresses his thoughts on the things that have to be done to make the dream of a dynamic and strong India possible in the near future.

Emotional Inteligence

Everyone knows that high IQ is no guarantee of success, happiness, or virtue, but until Emotional Intelligence, we could only guess why. Daniel Goleman's brilliant report from the frontiers of psychology and neuroscience offers startling new insight into our "two minds"—the rational and the emotional—and how they together shape our destiny.

Through vivid examples, Goleman delineates the five crucial skills of emotional intelligence, and shows how they determine our success in relationships, work, and even our physical well-being. What emerges is an entirely new way to talk about being smart.

The best news is that "emotional literacy" is not fixed early in life. Every parent, every teacher, every business leader, and everyone interested in a more civil society, has a stake in this compelling vision of human possibility.

Good to Great

In Good To Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...And Others Don't, the author uses fully researched data to form conclusions on why companies fail to transition between being average to being great while others succeed. For the purpose of the book, being great has been defined as financial performance of companies that far exceed the norms set by others.

Jim Collins created the concept of this book after writing another management study that talked about the methodology of infusing a company with the DNA it needs to achieve greatness. This book talks about what a company can do when it isn’t born with great DNA. For the purpose of the study, the author used a team of researchers who reportedly studied 6,000 articles, transcribed 2,000 pages from interviews and also generated 384 megabytes of data during a five-year project.

The book highlights seven different characteristics that are inherent qualities of great companies. These include the type of leadership that a company requires, the act of recruiting the right people before proceeding with operations and the use of technology as a factor to stimulate your company’s growth.

Companies that are categorized as great in Good To Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...And Others Don't include the Gillette Company, Kimberly Clark and Wells Fargo. There are also comparators that are used as examples of similar companies that were present in similar spaces who failed to transition into greatness. The comparators include Bank Of America, Great Western Bank and Silo.

Good To Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...And Others Don't is considered one of the most influential management books of its time. Many members belonging to The Wall Street Journal’s CEO council have considered the book to be the best management book they have ever read. The acclaim translated to 4 million copies sold and it transcended from the usual audience of a business book to a much wider audience.

Girlboss

In the New York Times bestseller that the Washington Post called “Lean In for misfits,” Sophia Amoruso shares how she went from dumpster diving to founding one of the fastest-growing retailers in the world.

Amoruso spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and scrounging in dumpsters for leftover bagels. By age twenty-two she had dropped out of school, and was broke, directionless, and checking IDs in the lobby of an art school—a job she’d taken for the health insurance. It was in that lobby that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay.

Flash forward to today, and she’s the founder of Nasty Gal and the founder and CEO of Girlboss. Sophia was never a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she’s written #GIRLBOSS for other girls like her: outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is windy as all hell and lined with naysayers.

#GIRLBOSS proves that being successful isn’t about where you went to college or how popular you were in high school. It’s about trusting your instincts and following your gut; knowing which rules to follow and which to break; when to button up and when to let your freak flag fly.

“A witty and cleverly told account . . . It’s this kind of honest advice, plus the humorous ups and downs of her rise in online retail, that make the book so appealing.” —Los Angeles Times

“Amoruso teaches the innovative and entrepreneurial among us to play to our strengths, learn from our mistakes, and know when to break a few of the traditional rules.” —Vanity Fair

“#GIRLBOSS is more than a book . . . #GIRLBOSS is a movement.” —Lena Dunham

The Audacity of Hope

It's been almost ten years since I first ran for political office. I was thirty-five at the time, four years out of law school, recently married, and generally impatient with life. A seat in the Illinois legislature had opened up, and several friends suggested that I run, thinking that my work as a civil rights lawyer, and contacts from my days as a community organizer, would make me a viable candidate. After discussing it with my wife, I entered the race and proceeded to do what every first-time candidate does: I talked to anyone who would listen. I went to block club meetings and church socials, beauty shops and barbershops.

History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters

Funny, ironic, erudite, surprising, and not afraid to take a dive overboard into the depths of sorrow and loss. My novel of the year' Nadime Gordimer Beginning with an unlikely stowaway’s account of life on board Noah’s Ark, A History of the World in 10½ Chapters presents a surprising, subversive, fictional history of earth told from several kaleidoscopic perspectives. Noah disembarks from his ark but he and his Voyage are not forgotten: they are revisited in on other centuries and other climes - by a Victorian spinster mourning her father, by an American astronaut on an obsessive personal mission. We journey to the Titanic, to the Amazon, to the raft of the Medusa, and to an ecclesiastical court in medieval France where a bizarre case is about to begin... This is no ordinary history, but something stranger, a challenge and a delight for the reader's imagination. Ambitious yet accessible, witty and playfully serious, this is the work of a brilliant novelist.

Living to Tell the Tale

Something in her had changed, and this kept me from recognizing her at first glance. She was forty-five. Adding up her eleven births, she had spent almost ten years pregnant and at least another ten nursing her children. She had gone gray before her time, her eyes seemed larger and more startled behind her first bifocals, and she wore strict, somber mourning for the death of her mother, but she still preserved the Roman beauty of her wedding portrait, dignified now by an autumnal air. Before anything else, even before she embraced me, she said in her customary, ceremonial way:
