‘চণ্ডীমণ্ডপ’ এবং ‘পঞ্চগ্রাম’ উপন্যাসে তারাশঙ্কর কালান্তরের এক নূতন দেবতাকে আবাহন করেছেন। এ দেবতা বিষ্ণুও নন; শিব নন; এ দেবতা গণদেবতা। পৌরাণিক গণদেবতা অর্থাৎ আদিত্য, বিশ্ব, বসু, তুষিত, আভাস্বর, অনিল, মহারাজিক, সাধ্য, রুদ্র,—এই নয়জন দেবতার সমষ্টিও নয়। তারাশঙ্করের গণদেবতায় পৌরাণিক দেবতা নেই, আছে অনিরুদ্ধ, পাতু, শ্ৰীহরি, দুর্গা, দেবু, পদ্ম। এরা দেবতা নয়, মানুষ। আত্মকেন্দ্ৰিক একক মানুষ নয়, গোষ্ঠীকেন্দ্ৰিক সামাজিক মানুষ। গোষ্ঠীজীবনের গণশক্তিতে যে-দেবতার রথের চাকা চলে তিনি গণদেবতা। চণ্ডীমণ্ডপ এই গণদেবতার বিগ্ৰহ। অপেক্ষাকৃত আধুনিককালে ‘গণশক্তি’ এবং ‘জনগণ' কথাগুলির রাজনৈতিক ব্যঞ্জনা আছে। কিন্তু তারাশঙ্কর গণদেবতা বলতে যা বুঝেছেন তা সামাজিক institution। তার অতিরিক্ত কিছু নয়। চণ্ডীমণ্ডপের সমাজ-শাসনের অন্যায়-অবিচারের সমালোচনা তিনি করেননি, এমন কি চণ্ডীমণ্ডপের শাসনশক্তির উপর তেমন প্রচণ্ড রকম গুরুত্বও তিনি আরোপ করেননি। চণ্ডীমণ্ডপের শাসন যে অস্বীকার করেছে সেও চণ্ডীমণ্ডপের বহির্ভূত নয়। চণ্ডীমণ্ডপের গোষ্ঠীসমাজের বিরুদ্ধে ব্যক্তি-বিবেকের বিদ্রোহের ইঙ্গিতও তারাশঙ্কর দেননি। ‘গণদেবতা’য় তারাশঙ্কর দেখিয়েছেন, চণ্ডীমণ্ডপকে আশ্রয় করে ব্যষ্টিজীবন গোষ্ঠীজীবনে পরিণত হয়েছে। চণ্ডীমণ্ডপ-আশ্রিত গোষ্ঠী জীবন এবং গোষ্ঠীজীবনের বিলয়, উগ্র ব্যক্তি-স্বাতন্ত্র্যের উদ্ভব, শহরকেন্দ্ৰিক নূতন সামাজিক institution এর আবির্ভাব, agricultural economy-র পরিবর্তে industrial economy-র প্রাধান্য-বিংশ শতকের দ্বিতীয়ার্ধের বাঙালী জীবনের যুগান্তরের এই ইতিহাস ধরা পড়েছে তারাশঙ্করের গণদেবতা পরিকল্পনায়। সে বিচারে ‘গণদেবতা’ এবং ‘পঞ্চগ্ৰাম’ একালের বাঙালীর সামাজিক, অর্থনৈতিক এবং রাজনৈতিক ইতিহাসের ভাষ্য। বিংশ শতকের দ্বিতীয়ার্ধের মানুষের জীবন সোজাও নয়, বাঁকও নয়, ত্রিভুজাকৃতি। রাজনীতি, অর্থনীতি এবং সমাজ সে ত্রিভুজের তিনটি বাহু। তারাশঙ্করের অনেক চরিত্র ত্রিভুজাকারের। সেটি তার ইতিহাস-চেতনার লক্ষণ। এবং এই কারণে ইতিহাসের পদক্ষেপের চিহ্ন পড়ে তারাশঙ্করের ‘পঞ্চগ্ৰাম’ এপিক লক্ষণাক্রান্ত হয়ে উঠেছে। বিষয়গৌরবে এই দুখানি উপন্যাসের শ্রেষ্ঠত্বের কথা স্বীকার করেই বোধ হয় ‘গণদেবতা’কে এ যুগের মহার্ঘ্যতম সাহিত্য-পুরস্কারের জন্য নির্বাচন করা হয়েছিল
I'm not very interested in my schooldays, and don't feel any nostalgia for them. But school is where it all began, so I need to return briefly to a few incidents that have grown into anecdotes, to some approximate memories which time has deformed into certainty. If I can't be sure of the actual events any more, I can at least be true to the impressions those facts left. That's the best I can manage.
In Midnight’s Children, Saleem, the protagonist, has been endowed with telepathic powers as a result of the unusual time that he was born, and these powers allow him to connect with one thousand other such children who were born at that hour. Besides Saleem, the readers are introduced to other characters as well, two of them being Shiva and Parvati, who are also endowed with mysterious powers as a result of being born at that particular time in India’s history. Saleem assembles all of these characters telepathically, and they attempt to understand the relevance of their gift.
The story is based on actual historical facts as well as fiction, and provides the readers with a great deal of insight into the lives of people who lived during the Partition of India. Midnight’s Children highlights the plight of the people and the problems faced by the leaders as well.

উপন্যাসটির অসংখ্য পাত্র-পাত্রীর মধ্যে রয়েছে হোসে আর্কাদিও বুয়েন্দিয়ার মতন অসাধারণ কৌতুহলী, উদ্ভাবনীশক্তিসম্পন্ন, দুঃসাহসী, ও বুদ্ধিমান চরিত্র, যে নিজের জ্ঞান-বুদ্ধি খাটিয়েই আবিষ্কার করে ফেলে যে পৃথিবী গোল; তার স্ত্রী, উরমুলা ইগুয়ারান নামের কর্মঠ, সর্বব্যাপিনী, সর্বংসহা, শতায়ু, নিঃসঙ্গ নারী, যাকে সারা জীবন তাড়া করে ফেরে তার বংশে শুয়েরের লেজাবিশিষ্ট কারো জন্মের আশংকা; রয়েছে, পায়ের তলায় সর্ষে নিয়ে সারা দুনিয়া ঘুড়ে বেড়ানো, বিদগ্ধ, রহস্যময়, বেদে মেলকিয়াদেস; সুন্দরী রেমেদিওস নামের সৃষ্টিছাড়া সৌন্দর্যের অধিকারিণী এক অপার্থিব রমণী, যার প্রণয়পিপাসুরা একের পর এক বৃথাই আত্মাহুতি দিয়ে চলে তার রূপের অনলে, আর অবশেষে যে প্রকাশ্যে দিবালোকে ধীরে ধীরে উর্ধাকাশে উঠে মিলিয়ে যায় অসীম শূন্যে; রয়েছে, কর্ণেল অরেলিয়ানো বুয়েন্দিয়া। বত্রিশটি সশস্ত্র বিদ্রোহ সংগঠিত করে সব কয়টাতেই হেরে গিয়েছিল সে, এড়িয়ে গিয়েছিলো তার প্রাণের ওপর চালানো চোদ্দটা হামলা, তিয়াত্তরটা অ্যামবুশ আর একটা ফায়ারিং স্কেয়াড। যুদ্ধের পর তাকে দেয়া আমরণ অবসর ভাতা ঘৃণাভরে ফিরিয়ে দিয়ে জীবিকা নির্বাহ করে গিয়েছিল নিজের কামারশালায় বসে ছোট ছোট সোনার মাছ বানিয়ে। আর রয়েছে, এসব ঘটনা-দুর্ঘটনা, লৌকিক-অলৌকিকের কেন্দ্রবিন্দু মাকোন্দা নামের গ্রামটি, যে-গ্রামকে ঘিরেই আবর্তিত হয়েছে উপন্যাসের প্রায় সব পাত্র-পাত্রীর ব্যক্তিগত, সামাজিক, রাজনৈতিক, আধ্যাত্মিক ও বৈধ-অবৈধ যৌন-জীবন; আর এসব এক অদ্ভুত উপায়ে মিলেমিশে গিয়ে যে-জগতের সৃষ্টি করেছে তা একদিকে যেমন পাঠকের কাছে রীতিমতন আশ্চর্য আর অদ্ভুত বলে মনে হয়, তেমনি আবার তা নিতান্ত পরিচিত বলেও ঠেকে; মনে হয়, এ-কাহিনী যেন মানবেতিহাসেরই এক সুনিপুণ পুনর্বয়ণ।
