উয়ারী-বটেশ্বর সম্প্রতি বাংলাদেশের সবচেয়ে আলোচিত প্রত্নস্থান। কৃষিজমি, বাগানবাগিচা ও ঘরবাড়ির নিচে চাপা পড়ে আছে আড়াই হাজার বছরের প্রাচীন একটি নগর। উয়ারী-বটেশ্বর অঞ্চলের ৫০ টি প্রত্নস্থান থেকে আবিষ্কৃত হচ্ছে প্রাগৈতিহাসিক যুগের পাথর ও প্রস্তুরীভূত জীবাশ্ম -কাঠের হাতিয়ার, তাম্র-প্রস্তর সংস্কৃতির গর্ত-বসতি এবং বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাস নতুন করে লেখার তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ সব প্রত্নববস্তু। উয়ারী-বটেশ্বর ছিল বাংলাদেশের প্রাচীনতম মহা জনপদ। দূর্গ নগরটি ছিল সেই মহা জনপদের রাজধানী। এটি গড়ে উঠেছিল সুপরিকল্পিতভাবে । ইতিমধ্যে এখান থেকে আবিষ্কৃত হয়েছে মাটির দূর্গ-প্রাচীর, পরিখা, পাকা রাস্তা, পার্শ্ব রাস্তাসহ ইটনির্মিত অনন্য স্থাপত্য নিদর্শন। পুরাতন ব্রহ্মপুত্র নদের অববাহিকায় অবস্থিত উয়ারী-বটেশ্বর ছিল একটি নদী বন্দর ও আন্তর্জাতিক বাণিজ্যকেন্দ্র। মনে করা হচ্ছে, টলেমি বর্ণিত সৌনাগড়াই উয়ারী -বটেশ্বর।আরও মনে করা হচ্ছে, উয়ারী বটেশ্বর অঞ্চলে ছিল গঙ্গাঋদ্ধি জাতির বাস। ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশের আদি ঐতিহাকি কালের অনেক নগর এবং দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়া ও ভূমধ্যসাগর অঞ্চলের সঙ্গে যোগাযোগ ছিল উয়ারী-বটেশ্বরের। ২৩০০ বছরের প্রাচীন ৪০০০ কিলোমিটার দীর্ঘ বিশ্ববিখ্যাত সিলক্ রুটের সঙ্গেও যে উয়ারী বটেশ্বর সংযুক্ত ছিল, নানা নিদর্শনগত প্রমাণ থেকে সম্প্রতি তা উজ্জ্বল হয়ে উঠতে শুরু করেছে। উয়ারী-বটেশ্বরে বিকশিত হয়েছিল স্বল্প-মূল্যবান পাথরের নয়নাভিরাম পুঁতি তৈরির কারখানা। এখানে আবিষ্কৃত উপমহাদেশের প্রাচীনতম ছাপঙ্কিত রৌপ্যমুদ্রা ও মুদ্রাভান্ডার , অনন্য স্থাপত্যকীর্তি ,হরেক রকমের পুঁতি, সুর্দশন লকেট ও মন্ত্রপূত কবচ, বাটখারা, পোড়ামাটি ও ধাতব শিল্পবস্তু, মৃৎপাত্র, চিত্রশিল্প ইত্যাদি শিল্পীর দক্ষতা, উন্নত শিল্পবোধ ও দর্শনের পরিচয় বহন করে । এ গ্রন্থে এসব কিছুরই সমূল পরিচয় তুলে ধরা হয়েছে অনুপুঙ্খভাবে।
আমি ওই বয়সেই চোখের সামনে স্পষ্ট দেখতে পাচ্ছিলাম আমি ছেলেটিকে ধরবাে অথবা ধরবার জন্য লােকজনের সাহায্য চাইবাে, সবাই আমাকে ভিড় করে দেখবে, আমার শরীরের বাঁক দেখবে, উজ্জ্বলতা দেখবে, যন্ত্রণা দেখবে, আমার আর্তস্বর, আমার ক্রোধ, আমার কান্না দেখবে। কেউ আহা উহু করবে, কেউ গায়ে পড়ে জানতে চাইবে ব্যাপারটি কী, কেউ ছেলেটিকে ধরে এনে কষে দুই থাপ্পড় মারবার কথা বলবে, কেউ বাড়ি কোথায়, বাবা কে ইত্যাদির খোঁজখবর নেবে। আসলে সবাই তারা আমাকে উপভােগ করবে। আমার অসহায়ত্ব উপভােগ করবে। আমার নিরাপত্তাহীনতা উপভােগ করবে। পােড়া বাহু দেখবার নাম করে আসলে তারা আমার সুডােল খােলা বাহুটিই দেখবে। আমি চলে গেলে পেছনের শুভার্থীরা সমস্বরে সিটি দেবে। এসব ভেবেই আমি আমার সমস্ত যন্ত্রণা নিজের ভেতরে চেপে রেখেছিলাম।
পরিশেষে একটু ব্যক্তিগত কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ না করলেই নয়। ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অর্থনীতি বিভাগের অধ্যাপক, শ্রদ্ধাভাজন এম এম আকাশ বইটির সঙ্গে আমার প্রাথমিক পরিচয় না ঘটিয়ে দিলে আমি এমন একটি চমৎকার, হৃদয়গ্রাহী উপন্যাস অনুবাদ করার আনন্দ থেকে বঞ্চিত হতাম। আর-একজনের কথা না উল্লেখ করলেই নয়। কর্ম উপলক্ষে স্বল্পকালের জন্য বাংলাদেশে আসা যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের এক ব্যক্তির কথা। নাম তার জেনিফার লরেঞ্জ। তিনি আমাকে মূল ইংরেজির কিছু কিছু আঞ্চলিক শব্দ, অভিব্যক্তি এবং বাগ্-বৈশিষ্ট্য বুঝতে সাগ্রহে সাহায্য করেছেন।
প্রত্যেক লেখকেরই নিজস্ব এক ভরকেন্দ্র থাকে। যেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে তিনি নিজের জগৎ নির্মাণ করেন। অথবা সেখানে পা রেখেই তিনি নিজের বোধ-ভাষাকে অনন্ত নক্ষত্রবীথিতে ছড়িয়ে দেন। আর বড় লেখকরা অনেক সময় এই ভরকেন্দ্রও বদলে ফেলার ক্ষমতা রাখেন। গল্পকার পারভেজ হোসেনে এই পঞ্চম গল্পগ্রন্থ ডুবোচর এর এসে মনে হচ্ছে, তিনি তাঁর জীবন ও শিল্পভ্রমণের মধ্যপর্বে এসে সেটিকেও বদলে ফেলার সক্ষমতা দেখিয়েছেন। তাঁর বিগত গল্পবইগুলোতে আমরা ফিরে ফিরে পেয়েছি বিষখালি-সুগন্ধা-ধানসিঁড়ি-জাঙ্গালিয়া নদীতীরবর্তী জীবনের গাঢ় আখ্যান এমনকি নগরজীবনের গল্পেও যেন এর ঘ্রাণ থাকত। কিন্তু এই বইয়ে এসে যেন তিনি বড় ধরনের বাঁক নিলেন। আর কেবল গল্পই লিখেননি তিনি, বরং জীবনের এমন সব অনুভূতি ও জিজ্ঞাসার সামনের নিজেকে দাঁড় করিয়েছেন যে, কখনো কখনো তাঁর গল্পগুলো হয়ে উঠেছে আত্মদর্শন-উপলব্ধ অন্তর্গত বয়ান। গল্পগুলো পাঠ করতে করতে জীবনানন্দের গদ্যপদ্যর ঘ্রাণ টের পাবেন পাঠক, কিন্তু এতে জীবনানন্দর ভাষাপ্রভাবের সঙ্গে উভয় লেখকের ভূগোল, নৈকট্যও অনেক বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। হয়তোবা দেশের দক্ষিণাঞ্চলের প্রতিবেশটাই এমন যা এক -একজন লেখককে জীবনান্দতুল্য করে তোলে। আশির দশকের অন্যতম শক্তিমান গল্পকার পারভেজ হোসেন তাঁর এই নতুন বইয়েও লিখেছেন গ্রাম ও শহরের গল্প। কিন্তু লিখেছেন অন্য এক ভাষায়, আরো নিবিড় করে, পাঠকের অন্ত খুঁড়ে খুঁড়ে।
অবশ্য, উপরিউক্ত প্রশ্নের একান্ত ব্যক্তিগত উত্তরও রয়েছে। বিজ্ঞান আমাদের জানা বিষয়ের জ্ঞান প্রদান করে। কিন্তু আমরা খুব সামান্য বিষয়ই জানতে পারি। আমরা কতটুকু জানতে পারি না তা যদি ভুলে যাই, তাহলে অনেক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিষয় সম্পর্কে আমরা উদাসীন হতে পারি। অপরপক্ষে, বিশ্বজগৎ সম্পর্কে আমাদের যেখানে অজ্ঞতা রয়েছে সেখানে ধর্ম বিশ্বজগৎ সম্পর্কে এমন এক বিচারবিযুক্ত বিশ্বাসের সৃষ্টি করে যে, বিশ্বজগৎ সম্পর্কে আমাদের জ্ঞান আছে। এরূপ বিচারবিযুক্ত বিশ্বাস সৃষ্টির দ্বারা ধর্ম বিশ্বজগতের জ্ঞান সম্পর্কে অযৌক্তিক আস্ফালন প্রকাশ করে। তীব্র আশা-নিরাশার ক্ষেত্রে অনিশ্চয়তা বেদনাদায়ক। কিন্তু আমরা যদি সুখদায়ক রূপকথা ব্যতীত জীবনধারণ করতে চাই, তাহলে আমাদের অবশ্যই দুঃখবেদনা ধৈর্যের সঙ্গে সহ্য করতে হবে। তাই দর্শনের উত্থাপিত প্রশ্নসমূহকে ভুলে যাওয়া আমাদের জন্য যেমন শুভ হবে না তেমনি সেসব প্রশ্নের সন্দেহাতীত উত্তর পেয়েছি বলে বিশ্বাস করা ঠিক হবে না। আমাদের যুগে যারা দর্শনচর্চা করেন তাদেরকে দর্শন এখনাে প্রধানত যে শিক্ষা দেয় তাহলাে, নিশ্চয়তা ব্যতীত কীভাবে জীবনযাপন করা যায়, এবং নিশ্চিত জীবন না থাকলেও কীভাবে দ্বিধা-দ্বন্দ্বের মাঝে অসহায় না হয়ে জীবনযাপন করা যায়।
