দরােজা পেরিয়ে তারা ডানদিকে মােড় নিল, দেখলাম চত্বরের দিক থেকে। তাদের দিকে অগ্রসর হচ্ছে একটা কার। প্রথম ব্যাপার যেটা ঘটল তা হলাে কাচের একটা শার্সি ভেঙে গেল আর ডানদিকের দেয়াল বরাবর শাে-কেসের ওপর রাখা এক সারি বােতল চূর্ণ-বিচূর্ণ হয়ে গেল বুলেটের আঘাতে। বপ বপ বপ করে আগ্নেয়াস্ত্র থেকে ছােড়া অবিরাম গুলির আওয়াজ শুনতে পেলাম আর সমস্ত দেয়াল বরাবর বােতল ভাঙার শব্দ।
বাঙালির ইতিহাস লুট হয়ে গেছে। বাঙালি নিঃস্ব, দরিদ্র, হতদরিদ্র। কিন্তু সে কর্মবিমুখ, লােভী, পরশ্রীকাতর, প্রতারক নয়; এগুলাে বহিরাগত বৈশিষ্ট্য। বাঙালির মৌল ধর্ম সাংখ্যযােগ-তন্ত্র, যেখানে লােভ হিংসা প্রতারণার কোনাে স্থান নেই। বাঙালি সুখী পরােপকারী অতিথিপরায়ণ পরিশ্রমী জাতি। ডাকাতের অস্ত্রের কাছে গৃহস্থের পরাজয়ের অর্থ এই নয় যে, সে ভীরু, কাপুরুষ, দায়িত্বহীন। বাঙালির চরিত্র বৈশিষ্ট্যের অধিকাংশ নিন্দনীয় ব্যাপার বিদেশি প্রতারক শাসকের হাড়ে-মজ্জায় মিশ্রিত ছিল। ইতিহাস তার উজ্জ্বল সাক্ষী। শাসকগােষ্ঠীর প্রতারণা, লাম্পট্য, লােভী ও নিচু মানসিকতার প্রমাণ ইতিহাসের সকল গ্রন্থ। বাঙালির শান্তিপ্রিয় বৈশিষ্ট্যে এসব আমদানিকৃত বহিরাগত কলঙ্ক।
